| Technology: Web Development | MTL were commissioned to help create the LPP brand design and marketing campaigns to launch the on-line shopping site. The large catalogue meant categorisation was essential to enhancing the usability of the site to the end user. The web site is an e-commerce site with full basket and on-line payment support to include secure transactions using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). The strong branding on the site was essential for LPP as they are retailers of the products and not the manufacturers.
MTL and LPP conducted multiple surveys to establish parental buying habits specifically for wooden toys and the findings were included in the concepts of web design. It is essential with on-line retailing that the site meets the potential customer's expectation because, unlike a real shop, the retailer cannot talk to the customer. The aim was to make it easy to find the appropriate toys for the customer. This was done by allowing toys to be viewed by categories, e.g. age, type, etc. Also, each product listing had extensive information, clear pictures, dimensions and links to toys in the same categories. In some areas interactive viewers have been created to allow users to see the toys in action (click to view some toys with interactive viewers) which can be critical to the decision-making process. In particular there is a nice Flash demonstration of being able to listen to wooden musical instruments (view here) by moving the mouse over them.
LPP manage their on-line catalogue using a back-end secure Lotus Notes database that allows an easy and concise product listing facility for the administrators. The same database is linked to a one-way deposit order processing system that is accessed by the LPP dispatch units based in multiple locations. This concept allows the system to optimise orders to match the stock locations using least cost routing algorithms coded into the process. Therefore the stock optimisation routines allow LPP to resource smooth the classic stock problems associated with mail-order operations. | | |
